Social Justice Chatters Matters (A Podcast Series)

The podcast series hopes to capture the voices of racialized and marginalized people to help them amplify their voices and share their valuable insights. To fulfill the goal of creating equitable opportunities in post-secondary education it is essential that we hold this space and bring attention and focus to South Asian perspectives. Chatters Matters fosters vital conversations on social justice.

Canadian Association for Social Justice Education

In this project, we intend to welcome racialized social justice researchers and allies who engage in social justice education to come together and critically question normalized practices, systems, power/privilege, and behaviors. Through our interdisciplinary network, we encourage (un) traditional scholarly study informed by (non) traditional research in education done solely, in partnership, or in the community about social justice education.

A Critical and Comparative Exploration of Secondary School Social Justice Initiatives in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal

As Canada increases in its diversity, including a growing immigrant population, and an expanding emphasis on equity, diversity, and inclusion in social and government institutions, Canadian youth have become vocal advocates for their individual and cultural identities. As such, the public school system has been tasked with being responsive to such diversity.

What is the role of secondary schools in advocating for social justice?

What kinds of leading examples are currently present in our urban schools?

This research project conducted during COVID-19 brings forth high school students, teachers, and administrators’ voices on social justice initiatives on a schoolwide level in two urban secondary schools each in the following cities: Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. These three cities are hosts to a myriad of languages, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual identities, socioeconomic levels, races, and religions. As a result, they offer the ideal conditions to investigate social justice issues that emerge from diverse communities. The significance of this research is that it helps develop Canadian research on urban schools and brings the voices of students, teachers, and administrators to the forefront with the hope of redefining our commitment to social justice in education.

An exploration of two exemplary secondary schools committed to social justice in Kamloops Thompson School District (No. 73)

This study explores exemplary social justice initiatives at the school level at two high schools, one in an urban location and one in a rural location, that self-identify as schools that advocate and promote social justice. The research provides insights from administrators, teachers, and staff on who is conducting such initiatives, how are these initiatives sustained and what are the benefits, challenges, and possibilities of such initiatives in the schools. The significance of the study is to provide Canadian scholarship that contributes to the field of social justice education in Canada.
